Crusaders Win Fourth Straight with Sweep of Emmanuel

BELMONT, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey hit a season-high .411 and Liam Maxwell and Kyle Ferguson each reached double figures in kills, lifting the Crusaders to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-21) victory over Emmanuel in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action Friday night.

With the win, the Crusaders improve to 7-6 overall, 3-2 in league play, while the Lions fall to 2-8, 2-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Maxwell hit .333 with 12 kills, while adding five digs, two service aces and two block assists.
  • Ferguson tallied a .643 hitting percentage, registering 10 kills against one error in 14 attempts. He added a team-best five blocks.
  • Brennan Davis and Bryce Sullivan shared setting duties, combining for 40 assists (26 and 14, respectively). Sullivan was also credited with five digs.
  • Daniel Cerqua led The Abbey with seven digs.
  • Belmont Abbey opened with the match's first point, then answered an Emmanuel point with a 5-0 run. The lead was four at 20-16 when another five points in a row ended the first set, 25-16.
  • In the second, the teams were tied at 16 when the Crusaders capitalized on three straight errors for a 19-16 lead. The Lions won two of the next three to close to within 20-18, but two more errors and a Maxwell ace pushed the lead back to five, 23-18. At 24-19, both teams committed service errors, ending the set at 25-20.
  • Emmanuel started the third set up 6-2 after four straight points, but the Crusaders answered with five in a row. Later with the score 15-15, The Abbey tallied three straight points, but the Lions fought back to tie the score at 20 and again at 21. However, Ferguson, Andrew Kohut and Maxwell had kills around a Sullivan ace to close out the match 25-21.
