Maxwell Nets 13 Kills in Season Finale

TIGERVILLE, S.C. -- Liam Maxwell tallied 13 kills, but a hot-hitting North Greenville team handed Belmont Abbey a 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-19) setback in the men's volleyball regular-season finale Wednesday evening. The loss snapped The Abbey's six-match winning streak, tied for the longest in school history.

NGU (13-15, 7-9) hit .372 for the contest, while limiting the visitors to .183. Brennan Davis had 35 assists, while Rob Valentine tallied 12 digs.

Belmont Abbey (12-15, 8-8) jumped out to a quick start, breaking an 11-11 tie in the first set with four straight points. After North Greenville closed the gap to 20-18, BAC scored back-to-back points to stretch the lead back to four, then traded points for the 25-21 win.

The second set was again tied near the midway point, but this time the hosts used five straight to break a 13-13 tie. The Abbey cut the margin to three at 20-17, but could never get closer. The third set was all NGU as they scored 14 of the last 17 points after leading 11-8.

Belmont Abbey tried to force a deciding set but North Greenville broke a 7-7 tie with four straight points and never looked back.

The two teams will meet again in Belmont on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the Conference Carolinas Championship.
