Abrom Leads Crusaders to Win in Home Opener

BELMONT, N.C. -- Dequan Abrom just missed a career high with 33 points and Romeao Ferguson added a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds, leading Belmont Abbey to a 91-75 victory over Piedmont International Saturday night at the Wheeler Center. The win marked the home opener for the Crusaders, who won their third straight game to improve to 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Ben Ferguson and Sean Halloran also reached double figures in scoring with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
  • Belmont Abbey shot 56.0 percent (14-of-25) in the first half, its best 20-minute effort of the young season. It has now topped 50 percent three times in eight halves.
  • Piedmont International (2-4) hung around early, trailing by only four, 35-31 with five minutes left, but the Crusaders ended the period on a 19-2 run for a 54-33 advantage at the break.
  • The 30-point effort was the sixth of Abrom's career.
  • The Crusaders hit 32 of 35 (91.4 percent) free throws during the contest. After missing the first two, Belmont Abbey hit 31 straight free throws before the next miss with just 2:41 to play.

  • Belmont Abbey stays at home when it welcomes cross-town rival Johnson C. Smith to the Wheeler Center on Tuesday. The Crusaders and Golden Bulls will tip off at 8 p.m. following 5 p.m. wrestling match between The Abbey and Truett-McConnell.
