Schaffer Tallies 14 Kills in Saturday Action at Lincoln Memorial

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Gavin Schaffer tallied 14 kills and Liam Maxwell added 11, but a team-hitting percentage of .047 sent Belmont Abbey to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-22) setback in men's volleyball action at Lincoln Memorial Saturday afternoon.

Lincoln Memorial (2-2) used a 7-2 run early in the first set to turn a 4-2 lead into 11-4. The Crusaders (1-2) closed to 12-9, but the Railsplitters scored nine of the next 12 points for a 21-12 advantage. They took the set 25-16, holding a .250 to .036 hitting advantage during the period.

In the second, Belmont Abbey held an early 9-6 lead and was up 14-12 when LMU surged ahead. It scored four straight points for a two-point edge, 16-14. The teams traded the next five points before the Railsplitters won five in a row for a 23-18 lead. The Crusaders won back-to-back points to close to within four, but LMU answered with two straight to take the set 25-19.

LMU won the first six points of the third set and never relinquished. Belmont Abbey closed to within three on four occasions, the last at 9-6, but two straight points put the lead back to five. The difference was 20-13 when The Abbey made a last-minute push. It outscored the Railsplitters 7-3 to cut the gap to 23-20, but LMU split the next four points for the victory.

Belmont Abbey opens Conference Carolinas play next Saturday night when it returns home to face King.
