Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Emry Tsitouris scored 12 points and Maria Kuhlman added 10 points, but a late run lifted Charleston (W.Va.) to a 53-42 decision over Belmont Abbey in women's basketball action Tuesday afternoon. The Crusaders had won six games in a row entering the contest.
Belmont Abbey (7-4) was outscored 19-4 over the last 12:10, including 13-4 in the fourth period. The Golden Eagles tallied the final 10 points of the contest after the Crusaders pulled to within 43-42 on a Kuhlman jumper with 4:41 remaining.
Neither team shot the ball well from the field with Belmont Abbey hitting just 31.6 percent to the Golden Eagles' 35.8 percent. Charleston also posted a 44-27 rebounding advantage.
Belmont Abbey (7-3) trailed 4-2 but hit back-to-back threes by Hanah Romey and Maria Kuhlman to take an 8-4 lead. The Crusaders' lead was 12-8 later in the quarter, but Charleston scored the last five points of the period to take a 13-12 advantage after 10 minutes. The run continued to 9-0 before another Romey three cut the gap to 17-15, then another basket evened the game at 17-all. The Golden Eagles scored six straight en route to a 25-20 lead at the break.
The hosts opened the second half with a basket before The Abbey used a 12-0 run to open its biggest lead of the game, 34-27 at the 6:23 mark of the third, but UC countered with an 11-2 surge lasting over five minutes to lead 40-38 after three.
The Crusaders now enjoy some time off for the Christmas break before returning to action on Dec. 30 at home against Mount Olive.
