Crusaders Close Season with Heartbreaker in Conference Tournament

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team saw its 2025-26 season come to an end Friday night as the Crusaders fell 53-50 to Chowan in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Tournament Friday at Wofford's Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

Leigha Dennison and Sofia McNabb each finished with 11 points on the evening while Madison Lusk had 10 as part of double figures for the Abbey.

Dennison also had six rebounds and three assists while McNabb had seven rebounds and four assists.

Belmont Abbey concludes the season with a 21-7 overall record. Chowan is 18-8 and advances to play Barton in the semifinals on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams were locked in a defensive battle early as the first four Crusader points came from the free throw line.
  • Riley James got the first field goal for the Abbey with a jump shot at 4:32 left in the first quarter.
  • Dennison led the Crusaders with six points in the first half, including the other two baskets of the opening quarter.
  • Chowan rallied to tie the game at 18 late in the half.
  • After going 0 for 13 from 3-point range to open the contest, Ava Fulkerson and Madison Lusk each hit 3-pointers late in the half to give Belmont Abbey a 24-20 lead at the half.
  • Madison Lusk opened the second half with a made 3-pointer to give the Abbey a 7-point lead.
  • Dennison's field goal with 6:22 remaining in the fourth quarter was the last one the Crusaders made on the evening.
  • Chowan outscored the Abbey 10-3 over the final six minutes of the contest.
  • The Crusaders had a pair of looks from 3-point range to tie the game but were unable to convert.
  • Brielle George led the team with eight rebounds.
  • Riley James scored four points and had a pair of steals in her final game as a Crusader.
 
POSTSEASON HONOREES
  • Belmont Abbey's Brielle George and Riley James both received their All-Defensive Team awards while James also got her all-conference award.
  • Additionally, Sydney Martin received the Elite 26 award for having the highest GPA at the final championship site.
