The Belmont Abbey women's tennis team opened the 2016 spring season with a convincing 9-0 victory over the visiting Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls this afternoon at the Reidy Tennis Center. Belmont Abbey is now 1-1 on the year.
The Crusaders posted straight sets victories in five of six singles matches and won all three doubles matches convincingly.
Teagan McNamara and Kiersten Cox posted an easy 8-0 win at the doubles top flight, with Lillie Mehan and Ali Bates posting an 8-2 victory at the two spot. Erika Noblett and Hannah Davis also won by an 8-2 score at number three to give the Abbey a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
At the top spot, Alex Weber came back from a set down to win in three sets 2-6, 6-1 and 6-3. The rest of the Crusaders followed with straight sets wins as Rachele Subik posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at the second spot. Brylee Seitz earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at number three and Noblett cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at number four.
Bates scored an easy 6-0, 6-1 win at number five, and Davis punctuated the shutout with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at number six.
The Crusaders are back on the court Saturday as they enter conference play on the road at Limestone. First serve is noon.
