Box Score The Belmont Abbey Men's Basketball team lost on the road 72-61 to Pfeiffer this evening in its final contest of the 2015-16 campaign. The loss gives the Abbey a final record of 9-19 and 5-15 in the conference. With the win, Pfeiffer improved to 13-14 on the season and 9-10 in conference play.
The start of the game looked promising for the Crusaders, as they did not give up a point for the first three and a half minutes of play. After falling into a deficit, freshman Ben Ferguson made a jump shot to tie the game at seven with 11:55 in the half. It turned out to be the last time in the game the Crusaders were not trailing. Pfeiffer went on an 8-0 run to go up 15-7 and ended the half on another 8-0 run to take a 31-19 lead at the half.
Pfeiffer scored each of the first six points of the second to make the overall run a 14-0 one before the Abbey finally stopped the bleeding off a Nicholas Fullard dunk. The Crusaders kept chipping away, pulling to within 11 at multiple points. However, a span of 5:36 in which the Abbey only scored two points gave Pfeiffer a 67-41 lead.
Yet the Crusaders did not give up. The Abbey went on an 18-2 run in which senior Ray Chen scored 13 points, including the final eight Abbey points. After that, however, the clock expired and the Abbey took a 72-61 loss.
Chen finished with 19 points and four assists on the night, both team-highs. Sophomore Deion Lane contributed 15 points. He also had 12 rebounds and four steals, both game-highs.
Chen, after redshirting his true freshman year, finished with over 1,000 points scored in his three years of playing.
