Box Score

The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team finished with more goals (6) than King had shots (5) as the Crusaders handed the Tornado their first conference loss with a dominating 6-0 victory this afternoon at Alumni Field.

Belmont Abbey records its fifth shutout of the year-all in the last six matches- as the Crusaders improve to 5-2-1 overall and 3-0-0 in Conference Carolinas, while King drops to 5-2-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the league.

The Crusaders scored three goals in each half as six different players found the back of the net, scoring six goals on 31 shots.

Belmont Abbey controlled this one from the start, opening the scoring in the 13th minute as Megan Nanney served a cross from the left side to the top of the box, where a sprinting Jillian Lang met it on the dead run and thundered home the volley with her right foot for her first goal of the year.

14 minutes later, Tallee Zamiela was fouled hard from behind in the box and the referee awarded a penalty kick, which Laura Shelton converted for her first goal of the year and extend the lead to 2-0.

3:29 later, Kate Hennessy poked the ball away from a King defender deep in the Tornado end, gained possession, dribbled to the right and fired home a shot from the edge of the box towards the far post, tucking it just inside the left post for her third goal of the year and her second in as many games.

The lead was 3-0 at the half as the Crusaders outshot the Tornado 15-4 in the opening 45 minutes.

The offense kicked into overdrive in the final 45 minutes, as the Abbey outshot King 16-1.

The first goal of the half, and the Abbey's fourth of the match, came in the 59th minute on a simple corner kick from Cassidy Coutinho. Coutinho served the corner from the left side and bent the shot into the top right corner of the net for her second goal of the year.

16 minutes later, Meghan Philp became the fifth player to score, as she headed home Shelton's cross from the right side to the center of the box, where Philp beat Nicole Dagher to the far post. The marker is Philp's sixth winner of the season.

Cierra Skyers closed the scoring in the 82nd minute, taking a pass from Shelton and shooting from the center of the box, burying her seventh goal of the season.

Megan Bowen did not face a shot in the opening 45 minutes as her record improved to 4-1-0. Kaelyn O'Hop made one easy save as she played the final 45 minutes.

Along with the shots differential, Belmont Abbey attempted all seven corner kicks in the match.

The Crusaders are back in action Saturday at noon as they welcome Converse to Alumni Field for Homecoming.
