Box Score Belmont Abbey juniors Nolan Albrecht and Derek Sullivan set school records in kills and assists, respectively, and libero Jon Lowenhagen set a career-high in digs as the Crusaders men's volleyball team outlasted the visiting Alderson-Broaddus Battlers 3-2 this evening inside the Wheeler Center. Set scores were 35-37, 25-14, 25-15, 18-25 and 15-8. The win snaps a four match losing streak as the Abbey improves to 3-5, while the Battlers drop to 2-3.
Albrecht hit .462 as he broke the school record with 28 kills, becoming just the second player in program history to record 20 or more kills in a match. The previous record was 20 set by Anthony Pippen earlier this year in a 3-2 loss at King on January 23. Albrecht, who has reached double figures in kills in every match but one, hit .462 as he smashed 28 kills on 52 attacks with just four errors.
Sullivan recorded career-bests in kills (8) and hitting percentage (.583) while breaking the school record with 51 assists. His previous career best in kills was six against Fontbonne on March 5, 2013, and his earlier assists high was 48 against Erskine, also during the 2013 season.
Lowenhagen, the Crusaders libero, established a career-high with 18 digs. His previous best was 11 in the 3-2 loss at King earlier this year. He also had eight assists tonight.
Belmont Abbey hit .204 as a team as it rallied back from a marathon 37-35 loss in the opening set to win sets two and three rather easily before Alderson-Broaddus claimed the fourth set to bring the match to a 2-2 stalemate.
The fifth set was all Belmont Abbey, as the Crusaders won the first three points to control the early momentum, and would go on to win by a comfortable 15-8 margin.
The Crusaders won the digs battle 72-57 as Albrecht added 16 for his third double double of the year. Sullivan added 11.
At the net, Sullivan and Justin Snyder both had three block assists with Dustin Buell and Brennan Beyner adding two each. Albrecht added four solo blocks and one assisted, while Beyner had two solo blocks.
