Box Score The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team shot just 29 percent from the floor while three Georgia College starters scored at least 20 points as the Bobcats earned a 94-54 victory this evening in Milledgeville. Georgia College improves to 8-1, while the Crusaders fall to 3-4.
Three Crusaders reached double figures led by junior forward Marilyn Malphrus's career-high 14 points. She sank four of nine from the field and converted six of eight from the line. Her previous career-best was eight in an 83-50 home win over Southern Wesleyan 368 days ago. Gabrielle Bethel added 12 points and Taylor Gittings contributed 11.
Belmont Abbey shot just 29 percent from the field (16-55) and was just one of eight from three point range while sinking 21 of 31 free throws.
Georgia College, which never trailed and led by as many as 41 points, made exactly half of its shots (40-80), including six of 18 from three point range and eight of 11 from the line. Three starters scored at least 20 points as four players reached double figures.
The hosts led 33-11 after one but the Crusaders outscored the Bobcats 23-20 in the second quarter to cut Georgia College's lead to 54-34.
The Bobcats offense picked right back up where they left off in the third quarter, outscoring the Crusaders 27-9 to lead 83-43 entering the final quarter. The final quarter was low scoring as the Bobcats outscored the Crusaders 14-11 to earn the 40 point victory.
Belmont Abbey will now take off 11 days for final exams and will return to the court Wednesday, December 16 when hosting King.
