Men's Volleyball Sweeps Away Alderson-Broaddus, 3-0

Belmont Abbey freshman junior Spencer Fournell and freshman Brennan Beyner both set career-highs with 14 kills apiece to lead a Crusaders offense that hit a season best .308 in a 3-0 sweep of the visiting Alderson-Broaddus Battlers this evening inside the Wheeler Center. Scores were 25-19, 25-19 and 25-22. The win stops an eight match losing streak for the Crusaders as they improve to 3-16, while Alderson-Broaddus falls to 7-8.

Beyner recorded his first career double double as he hit a blistering .419 with 14 kills with just one error on 31 total attacks. He added 11 digs. Fournell was just as efficient, recording 14 winners on 34 total attacks with just five errors. Evan Young added seven kills to record a .462 attack (one error on 13 attacks), while Dustin Buell hit .385 (six kills, one error, 13 total attacks).

Derek Sullivan handed out 39 assists. Buell, Johnny Gomez and Jon Lowenhagen each had one assist. Fournell and Young both recorded a service ace.

At the net, Buell logged three block assists with Sullivan recording two. Young had three solo blocks.

Gomez's 12 digs led all players. Sullivan and Lowenhagen both totaled seven.

Belmont Abbey trailed just twice in the match-both coming in the third set-the last time at 5-4. The Crusaders bolted out to 7-2 leads in each of the first two sets and held off late Battlers surges to win by six both times.

In the third Alderson-Broaddus stormed out of the gate to a 4-1 lead but the Abbey pulled ahead 11-10 on a Fournell kill. The set was tight from there, as it the lead was tied five times, but the Crusaders won the last two points to seal the 25-22 win.
