Belmont Abbey freshman Connor Sellars scored five goals and
assisted on another but the Crusaders men's lacrosse team suffered
a 12-10 loss at the third-ranked Limestone Saints this afternoon.
Limestone improves to 11-1 overall and 5-0 in Conference Carolinas,
while the Abbey slips to 7-5 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Sellars tied for the game-high with five goals on 11 shots. He
also recorded a ground ball and a caused turnover. Daniel Marshall
added two goals, while Tanner Scharr, Dan Morrissey and Joey
McGinley all netted one. Morrissey and Scharr posted two assists,
while McGinley, Sellars and Scotty Steele all had one.
The first quarter was nearly scoreless before Sellars broke the
stalemate with 4:39 left in the period to move the Crusaders ahead,
but Limestone gained the equalizer on a Vinny Ricci strike with
1:41 to play sent the two teams into the second quarter deadlocked
at one.
After a defensive minded first quarter, the two offenses came
alive in the second as a total of seven goals were scored, four by
the Saints, but the Crusaders scored the final two-coming from
Marshall and Sellars-to trim the Saints lead to 5-4 at the
break.
Limestone opened the third by scoring the first three goals to
extend its margin to 8-4, but Sellars and Marshall netted
consecutive markers to inch the Crusaders closer at 8-6 heading
into the last period.
The Saints began the fourth just like they did the third,
scoring the first three goals consecutively, but the Abbey fired
back, closing the game by netting the last four goals of the
period, but the last goal of the game came from Sellars at the
buzzer.
