Belmont Abbey senior guard Tyshawn Good scored 30 of his
game-high 38 points in the second half, as the fourth-seeded
Crusaders upset the top-seeded Barton Bulldogs by a 105-87 score
this evening at Wilson Gymnasium. The Abbey advances to its third
Conference Carolinas Championship game in school history, and the
first since the 2002-03 season, as it moves to 21-9. Barton falls
to 21-7. Belmont Abbey advances to face the second-seeded Limestone
Saints Saturday night at 7:00 in Gaffney for the automatic berth to
the NCAA Regional.
The triumph snaps a seven-game losing streak to Barton, dating
back to the 2009-10 season, and it is the Crusaders first victory
in Wilson since the 2005-06 campaign. This will be the Abbey's
third appearance in the Conference Carolinas Tournament
Championship game, joining the 2002 and 2003 teams, which both won
the title.
After trailing 42-41 at the half, Belmont Abbey came out like
gangbusters in the second half, scoring 20 of the first 28 points
in the half to take a lead it would never lose. The Crusaders
outscored the Bulldogs 64-45 in the final period as they shot 56.3
percent in the stanza, and 54.7 (35-64) for the game.
Good led five Crusaders in double figures with 38 points, 30
coming in the second half. After converting just three of six field
goals in the opening 20 minutes, Good scored 30 in the second on
seven of seven shooting from the floor in the second half, and made
15 of 18 from the line. He is now 23 points shy of 2,000 for his
career. He also had six assists, six rebounds and a steal. Darryl
Durham scored 11 of his 18 in the second half, and grabbed 11 of
his 16 rebounds in the stanza. He finished with 18 points and 16
rebounds, with a blocked shot and a steal. Jay Council added 17,
while Chris Davis netted 15 and nine rebounds, and Terrone Sheffey
contributed 11 and seven assists.
The Crusaders trailed just once in the second half, at 44-43
before embarking on a 20-6 run over the next six minutes to move
the lead to 13. Barton would cut the lead to single digits just
once, at nine points with11:06 to play, but the Abbey kept the
Bulldogs at bay as it controlled the second half.
Two free throws from Good at the 6:05 mark rose the lead to its
highest of the game, 19 points at 85-66, and the Bulldogs would get
no closer than 12 the rest of the way. The Crusaders scored the
final six points of the game on four free throws from Good and a
thunderous dunk from Durham-which started from a steal by
Davis-that capped the scoring.
