The Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team outscored Florida Southern
2-1 in the fourth quarter, as Dan Morrissey and Tanner Scharr
scored the last two goals of the game in the final 2:30 to overcome
a 6-5 deficit to post a 7-6 win this afternoon. The Abbey moves to
4-0 for the first time in school history, while Florida Southern
drops to 2-2.
Trailing 6-5, Morrissey scored an unassisted tally with 2:29
showing. Less than a minute later, Florida Southern won the ensuing
face-off and set up its offense, only to have Morrissey swat the
ball away. His caused turnover, ground ball and good clearance into
the Florida Southern zone was good enough to find Scharr, who
ripped home the winner at the 1:58 mark.
Florida Southern had two chances to tie the game, only to have
Brett Lawless post the last of his eight saves. On the clearance,
however, Scharr was whistled for a penalty with 24 seconds left on
a cross check.
With one last chance, Florida Southern's Dane Sorensen ripped a
shot wide with one second left, as the Abbey posted its fourth win
in as many tries.
Daniel Marshall led the Abbey with three goals, while Scharr
netted a pair. Morrisey and Caleb Holt had one each. Morrissey and
Scharr both finished with two assists.
Sorenson and Stephen Boyle both led the Moccasins with two goals
apiece, while Shane Tompkins and Kevin Naslonski both had one.
Belmont Abbey outshot Florida Southern 36-33 and won the ground
ball battle 34-24.
Defensively, Connor Doyle caused four turnovers and Josiah Nash
had three.
DJ Lubs led Florida Southern with four caused turnovers.
