Belmont Abbey senior guard Tyshawn Good scored 43 points, one
shy of the school and career-mark he set just five days ago, as the
Abbey men's basketball team outscored King 59-39 in the second half
to post a key 110-92 win over the Tornado this evening at the
Wheeler Center. Belmont Abbey, winners of four-straight, move its
record to 16-6 overall and 9-5 in Conference Carolinas, while King
slips to 15-6 overall and 10-5 in Conference Carolinas.
The Crusaders trailed 53-51 at the half as the first 20 minutes
featured 12 ties and 11 lead changes. No lead by either team was
greater than five points. Good scored 25 of his points in the first
half on eight of 14 shooting as the Abbey totaled a 50 percent
output for the half, while King shot 55 percent in the opening 20
minutes.
The second half, however, was all Belmont Abbey. The Crusaders
stormed out on a 29-10 run as a Jay Council layup at the 12:16 mark
made it 77-63. That bucket by Council started a 20-6 Abbey
jaunt-punctuated by a thunderous dunk by Terrone Sheffey on a fast
break- that pushed the lead to its highest of the game, 25 points
at 95-70 with 7:59 to play.
King could only get to as few as 16, which it did twice, but the
Abbey's 57 percent shooting in the half was too much for King to
handle as the Crusaders notched their fourth-straight victory.
Good, who leads NCAA Division II in scoring average, has totaled
87 points in his last two games. His 43 points tonight are his
third game with at least 40 points this season. He led four
Crusaders in double figures as he made 14 of 21 shots, including
four of eight from three-point range, and 11 of 13 from the line.
He also had eight rebounds, five assists and four steals in 38
minutes.
Council added 21 points and ten rebounds to notch a double
double and Sheffey finished with 20 on eight of 12 shooting. Darryl
Durham registered 13 points on four of six shooting. The Abbey shot
53 percent for the game.
Aaron Wheeler led the Tornado with 19 points and Eddie Piccinini
added 14 as King shot 50 percent for the contest.
