Pfeiffer had three players score at least 14 points as the Lady
Falcons women's basketball team pulled away in the second half and
earn a 63-49 Conference Carolinas women's basketball victory
tonight at Merner Gym. Pfeiffer gains a season sweep of the series
as it improves to 16-3 overall and 11-3 in Conference Carolinas,
while the Abbey, which had its three-game winning streak snapped,
drops to 10-9 overall and 9-6 in Conference Carolinas.
Neither team shot particularly well, as Pfeiffer finished with a
35 percent output to just 30 percent for the Abbey as the Lady
Falcons received a game-high 23 points from Kellie Rhoney. Rhoney
made all six of her field goals and was 11-12 from the line. She
also had six rebounds. Jodie Lemons added a double double with 15
points and 11 rebounds, while Brittany Cox added 14 points and
three blocked shots.
Pfeiffer led 26-20 at the half as it outscored the Abbey 8-0 in
the final 7:10 as it turned a five point deficit into a six point
halftime lead. The Crusaders last points of the half came at the
8:26 mark on a layup by Alyx Ingram. Belmont Abbey missed its last
14 shots of the half after Ingram's bucket.
In the second half the Lady Falcons extended their lead to nine
before a 7-2 Crusader run closed the lead to four. Pfeiffer fired
right back with a 7-0 run to push its lead to 11 points at 38-27
with 12:58 to play.
A traditional three-point play from Kelsey Long at the 12:30
mark closed the Abbey's deficit to eight, but it would not get to
single digits again as Pfeiffer's lead rose to as high as 19
points, which happened on three occasions.
Belmont Abbey scored the last five points of the game, all from
the free throw line, to close the scoring.
Long led the Abbey with 15 points on 5-17 shooting from the
field. She made all five of her free throw attempts in all 40
minutes. McKenzie Owen added 10 points to reach double figures for
the third-straight game. She made five of ten from the floor.
Melisa Foures pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds in all 40
minutes. Candace Fox also stayed on the floor for all 40 minutes,
scoring four points and handing out three assists.
