Belmont Abbey senior guard Tyshawn Good scored 24 of his
career-high 44 points in the second half, breaking the school
record, as the Crusaders outscored Pfeiffer 59-24 in the second
half to erase an 11 point deficit to post a 103-94 win this evening
at Merner Gym. The win, the Abbey's third straight and the fifth in
the last six games, improves the overall record to 15-9 overall and
8-5 in Conference Carolinas, while Pfeiffer drops to 3-17 overall
and 1-12 in league play.
Good's 44 points is a new school record, besting the previous
mark by two points, which was held by Joe McDermott and Carl Bell.
It is Good's second 40-plus point game of the season, as he
established his career-high with 40 points at North Greenville in
November. Good, who entered tonight's game leading NCAA Division II
in scoring average at 25.4 points per game, rose his average to
26.3 after tonight's effort.
The Jamaica, New York product led an offense that shot 53
percent from the floor, including 63 percent (19-30) in the second
half, as four of the starting five reached double figures. Jay
Council scored 16 points, Darryl Durham added 14 and ten rebounds,
and Terrone Sheffey added ten points and a career-high ten rebounds
for his first career double double. He also handed out eight
assists.
Good scored 20 in the first half on seven of 12 shooting, but in
the second half he was nearly perfect, converting eight of ten from
the field and six of eight from the line. For the game, he finished
15-22 from the floor, four of eight from three point range and ten
of 13 from the line.
Despite Good's 20 first half points, it was Pfeiffer that
controlled the opening 20 minutes, opening up a ten point lead on a
Josh Humphrey three-pointer with 10:55 to go. Belmont Abbey only
led twice in the first half, 3-0 and 5-3 before Pfeiffer took the
lead for the remainder of the half.
After Humphrey's three made it a ten point game, the Crusaders
slashed it to four on three-pointers from Good and Conrad, but the
Falcons responded with a mini run to push their lead back to
seven.
The Abbey charged right back with a 6-2 run, fueled by jumpers
from Sheffey and Tim Mason, to close the lead to a pair at 34-32
with 5:55 to play. Two straight buckets from Pfeiffer moved its
lead back to five, but Good scored the next six points to knot the
contest at 37 with 4:17 showing. Pfeiffer outscored the Abbey 12-7
the rest of the way to carry a 49-44 lead into the break.
Both teams shot very well in the second half, as Pfeiffer
recorded a 53 percent output, but the Abbey scored 59 points in the
half to take control late.
The Falcons moved their lead to 11 with 15:48 to go, but the
Crusaders made their move. Council closed the lead to eight with a
trifecta, and after a Pfeiffer basket at the other end, Council
responded with a jumper to inch the Crusaders to eight away.
Pfeiffer turned the ball over on its next two possessions, and Good
made them pay on both, as he scored on the ensuing turnovers to
bring the Abbey to within four with 13:21 to go.
Pfeiffer missed a jumper on the other end, and AJ Clark fouled
Justin Kuhlman on the next Abbey trip. Kuhlman's two free throws
with 12:27 to go pulled the Abbey to within two at 65-63.
Pfeiffer's next trip came up empty once again, and Council put
the Abbey ahead to stay with a three-pointer at the 11:38 mark. The
senior from Camden, South Carolina started a 17-2 run over the next
four minutes that extended the lead to 13 at 80-67. Council swished
two from beyond the arc, while Good connected on a layup and three
free throws.
Belmont Abbey's lead rose to as high as 14 points, and Pfeiffer
never got any closer than nine the rest of the way.
