Belmont Abbey senior guard Tyshawn Good tied for the game-high
with 35 points, but Barton shot 53 percent from the field as four
Bulldogs reached double figures in a 98-81 victory tonight at
Wilson Gymnasium. Barton remains atop the league standings at 19-6
overall and 14-5 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey drops to
19-8 overall and 12-7 in league play.
Good finished with 35 points, 24 in the second half, as he
finished 12-20 from the floor and nine of 12 from the free throw
line. He now has 740 points this season, which adds to the single
season school record he broke at Lees-McRae last Saturday. Terrone
Sheffey added ten points, eight in the second half. The Crusaders
shot 44.8 percent (26-58) from the floor and finished six of 16
(37.5 percent) from three point range and 23 of 31 (74.2 percent)
from the line.
Belmont Abbey scored the first five points of the game on a
three pointer from Jay Council and a Darryl Durham layup, but that
would be the largest Crusader lead of the night. The two teams
would trade the lead back and forth for much of the first half,
with the Abbey's five point edge standing as the largest for either
team in the first ten minutes, before Barton pulled away late.
After Durham tied the game at 27 with 6:57 to play, Barton
closed the half on a 17-6 run to build a 44-33 halftime lead.
The Crusaders opened the second half on an 8-4 run to close the
Barton lead to six with just under three minutes gone by, but the
Bulldogs responded with a 20-11 flurry over the next six minutes to
extend their lead to 15 at 66-51 with 11:47 to go.
From there, Belmont Abbey did not get any closer than 13 as
Barton's lead rose to as high as 22 with 1:42 to play, and it would
win by 17 to gain the season sweep of the Crusaders.
Barton shot 53 percent (33-62) as Gerald Boston, along with
Good, scored 35 points on 11-17 shooting. He also made 12 of 13
from the line. Chris Flemmings added 16, while Jon Hart and Keith
Manley added 12 and 10, respectively.
