The Belmont Abbey men's basketball team made just one field goal
in the last five minutes of the game, but the Crusaders converted
all 13 of their free throws in the final 4:58 to record their fifth
straight win with an 85-79 victory at Queens this evening. The
Abbey moves to 17-6 overall and 10-5 in Conference Carolinas at it
gains a season sweep of the Royals, which fall to 11-10 overall and
8-7 in Conference Carolinas.
Belmont Abbey shot 44 percent from the field as four players
reached double figures, led by Durham and Tyshawn Good, who both
totaled 21. Terrone Sheffey added 18 and Jay Council netted 14.
Queens shot 59 percent as Brandon Nichols led the Royals with
21. Antonio Stabler added 19, ten in the first half, while David
Mason and Nate Blackburn contributed 12 and 11, respectively.
The Crusaders penultimate field goal of the game came at the
5:33 mark as Durham as he grabbed a missed Justin Kuhlman layup and
slammed home the put back to increase the Abbey's lead to
70-63.
Belmont Abbey's 13 of its last 15 points of the game came from
the free throw line, all in the final 4:58, to seal the win.
Sheffey sank two at the 4:58 mark, followed by three from Good 19
seconds later after Blackburn knocked him down on a three-point
attempt. Those three conversions moved the Abbey's lead to ten.
Nichols converted a traditional three-point play on the Royals
next possession to knock the lead back down to seven with 4:28
showing, and that would be the last basket until a Stabler layup
with 2:52 to go closed the Abbey's lead to 75-70.
After a Queens timeout, Joby Glymph fouled Good with 2:41
remaining, and his two free throws pushed the lead back to seven.
Queens did not go away, as Blackburn cut the Crusaders edge to four
with a three-pointer at the 2:15 mark, and Glymph inched it to
77-74 after Chris Davis committed his fifth foul. Glymph missed the
first and made the second with 1:35 left, and Good scored the
Abbey's last field goal of the game with 1:03 to go that moved the
Abbey's lead to 79-74.
25 ticks later, Glymph went to the line with his team down
79-74, and made just one of two to chop the Crusaders lead down to
four. Kuhlman was fouled on the inbounds pass, and his two free
throws dropped in, extending the Abbey's lead to 81-75.
Nichols converted a layup on the next Queens possession, but he
fouled Sheffey on the inbounds pass. Sheffey sank the last two of
his 22 points, which extended the Crusaders lead to 83-77.
With 13 seconds left, Blackburn missed a three-pointer, which
Durham grabbed and fired the outlet pass to Good, who was
immediately fouled. With nine ticks left, Good scored points 20 and
21, punctuating the Abbey's 13-13 effort from the line. Seven
seconds later, Glymph scored the final points of the contest with a
layup, but the Abbey ran out the clock to seal the win.
The Crusaders led 36-34 at the half despite being outshot 57
percent to 41 percent, but the Royals turned the ball over ten
times in the half, and 15 for the contest.
