Belmont Abbey senior guard Tyshawn Good scored 21 of his 34
points in the second half, leading the Abbey to 60 second half
points, to lead five Crusaders in double figures in a 98-83 win
over Queens this evening at the Wheeler Center. Belmont Abbey
improves its record to 12-5 overall and 5-4 in Conference
Carolinas, while Queens drops to 8-7 overall and 5-4 in Conference
Carolinas.
With 1:30 left in the first half, Good had three points, but he
scored ten in the final 1:06 and added five more in the first 2:22
of the second half to push his total to 18 in a span of three
minutes. He led five players in double figures with 34 points on
13-20 shooting from the field, including three of six from
three-point range. He also had two assists and a steal in 30
minutes. Terrone Sheffey added 14 points on six of eight shooting.
Darryl Durham added 12 on five of nine shooting with nine rebounds
and three steals and Chris Davis chipped in with 11 points and 10
rebounds. Jay Council netted ten as the Abbey shot 56.1 percent
(37-66) from the field.
Trailing 34-35 with 6:00 to go in the first half, the Abbey
mounted its charge to take a 38-34 lead at the half. Sheffey cut
the deficit to seven with a jumper, and Davis added a free throw a
minute-and-a-half later.
After missed shots on both ends, Good took over. With 1:16 left,
he swished a three-pointer to cut the lead to three. Queens missed
a three-pointer on its next trip, and Good evened the score at 34
with another three-pointer, this one with 55 ticks left. Queens
came up empty on its next possession, and with three seconds left,
and the shot clock nearing zero, Good threw up from his hip a
contested shot from the right corner that found the bottom of the
net for his 13th point, which gave the Crusaders their first lead
since the 17:15 mark, a 38-34 halftime lead.
Good continued his mastery to start the second half, scoring the
five of the Abbey's first seven points to extend its lead to 45-36.
The advantage grew to 15 at 54-39 on a Tim Mason layup, but Queens
would respond by closing the gap down to seven at 68-61 with 7:17
to go, but that was as close as the Royals would get.
Belmont Abbey responded with a 12-4 run to move its lead to 16,
and from there, the cushion never dropped below 13 points as the
Abbey eclipsed 90 points for the fourth time this season.
Antonio Stabler led Queens with 29 points, while Brandon Nichols
added 17 and five assists as the Royals shot 46.3 percent (25-54)
for the game.
