Scharr's Four Goals Lead Men's Lacrosse Past Florida Tech, 11-6

Seven different Belmont Abbey players scored goals, led by junior attacker Tanner Scharr's game-high four strikes, as the Crusaders men's lacrosse team snapped a two-game losing streak with an 11-6 win over the visiting Florida Tech Panthers this afternoon at Alumni Field. The win ups the Abbey ledger to 4-7, while Florida Tech drops to 2-10.

Scharr found the back of the net four times on 12 shots, and Dan Morrissey scored twice, both producing the first goals of the first and second halves. Corey Cooke, Scotty Steele, Jarrett Bergin, Joey McGinley and Josiah Nash each had one. Scharr posted two assists, while Cooke, Morrissey, Ryan Corrigan, Connor Doyle and Walker Kirkikis each had one.

Belmont Abbey outshot the Panthers 44-22 as the Crusaders scored the first three goals of the game in less than four minutes. Florida Tech responded with two unanswered tallies to close the Abbey's lead to 3-2, but Scharr closed the opening quarter with a goal from Doyle at the 1:01 mark to stretch the lead back to 4-2.

Only two goals were scored in the second quarter, the first by Bergin off of a feed from Scharr, but Ryan Bailey countered for the Panthers to drop the Abbey lead to just two at 5-3 at halftime.

The Crusaders pulled away in the second half, outscoring Florida Tech 6-3, starting with two unanswered goals from Morrissey and Scharr to begin the third quarter. Florida Tech struck back with two of its own to close within 7-5, but Morrissey fed Scharr at the 3:31 mark to open up an 8-5 Crusader lead after three.

The final period was all Belmont Abbey as three of the six shots found the back of the net. Nash opened the frame with a goal 2:07 in, followed by a man-up strike by McGinley off of a feed from Scharr. Florida Tech scored its last goal at the 6:34 mark, but Scharr scored the final goal of the game, taking a pass from Cooke, at the 3:54 mark.

Belmont Abbey's defense caused 13 turnovers as Doyle led all players with four. He also had a team-high seven ground balls. Jared Shickles added six and won nine face-offs.
