Box Score The Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse
team fell 13-9 to the visiting Florida Southern Mocs this
afternoon at Alumni Field. The game was stopped with 1:14 left in
the game due to lightning in the area. The win evens Florida
Southern's record to 5-5, while the Abbey drops to 3-6.
Dan Morrissey led the Crusaders with three goals, while Tanner
Scharr added two. Brendan Rogers, Scotty Steele, Jarrett Bergin and
Ryan Corrigan all had one goal. Joey McGinley handed out three
assists while Morrissey and Rogers had one.
Mat Thompson led the Mocs with five goals and Dane Sorensen
totaled four. Shane Tompkins, Kevin Naslonski, Kyle Plaugher and
Larry Gress each had one.
Both teams overcame slow starts to score two goals each in the
first quarter before the Mocs outscored the Abbey 4-1 in the second
to grab a lead they would never lose. Corrigan's only goal of the
game came with 5:20 left to close the deficit to 6-3 at the
half.
The Crusaders opened the second half by scoring the first two
goals, a tally by Bergin and a man-up strike by Rogers to cut the
lead to one, but the Mocs countered with four unanswered goals as
part of a five goal third quarter, to lead 11-6 heading into the
fourth.
Morrissey opened the fourth with a man-up goal, and after a goal
by Thompson moved the Mocs advantage back to five at 12-7 with
14:16 to play, Steele and Rogers fired back with goals to close the
deficit to 12-9, but Sorensen closed the scoring with 1:53 left to
provide the winning margin. The game was halted 39 seconds later
due to lightning and after a 25 minute delay, the contest was
declared over.
