Box Score Ten different Belmont Abbey players scored goals, five of whom
scored twice, as the Crusaders men's lacrosse team picked up its
first Conference Carolinas victory with a 15-6 win over the
visiting Lees-McRae Bobcats this afternoon at Alumni Field. The win
ups the Abbey's record to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in Conference
Carolinas, while the Bobcats fall to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in league
play.
The Abbey, which outshot Lees-McRae 57-15, received two goals
from Tanner Scharr, Jared Shickles, Joey McGinley, Jarrett Bergin
and Corey Cooke. Dan Morrissey, Ryan Corrigan, Scotty Steele,
Brendan Rogers and Gregg Medici all had one. Morrisey had two
assists, as did Josiah Nash. Corrigan, Rogers and Steele each had
one.
Scharr scored the first goal of the contest at the 10:14 mark
and after Lees-McRae tied the game just under two minutes later,
The Abbey closed out the first quarter with three unanswered goals
to lead 4-1 after one.
The Bobcats scored the first and last goals of the second
quarter, but the Abbey had four of its own between those, two
coming from Cooke, as the lead grew to 8-2 at the half.
Belmont Abbey started the second half strong, scoring three
goals on nine shots to build its lead to 11-4. The fourth quarter
saw Shickles score both of his goals, the first of the quarter and
the Abbey's last, as the Crusaders totaled four in the period to
cement a 15-6 victory.
Every available Crusader saw action as the defense caused 21
turnovers, six coming from Connor Doyle, while Medici and Jon
Wolcott had three. Shickles, Nash and Kevin Costa each had a
pair.
The Crusaders won the ground ball battle 47-41 as Shickles's
nine led all players. He also won nine face-offs. Goalkeeper Brett
Lawless made just two saves in the first 45 minutes before giving
way to J.J. Rowan, who stopped one shot and scooped up three ground
balls.
