The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team survived a late King
rally that left the Crusaders trailing 43-42 with ten seconds
remaining in regulation, and Caitlyn Ranson made one of two free
throws after drawing a foul with one second left to tie the game at
43 and send it into overtime. The Abbey outscored King 10-5 in the
overtime period to come away with the 53-48 win. The win improves
the Crusaders to 11-11 overall and 7-6 in Conference Carolinas.
King falls to 4-18 overall and 4-10 in Conference Carolinas.
The Crusaders took a 2-0 lead to start the game on Kelsey Long's
jumper at the 18:56 mark. King answered with a Brittany Kinser
jumper and two Jana Cross free throws to take a 4-2 advantage. The
lead changed hands four times in the half, and was tied six times.
The Abbey took a 19-18 advantage into the half.
The second half began with the Crusaders going on an 8-1 run to
take a 27-19 lead at the 14:01 mark, the largest advantage of the
game. King responded by outscoring the Abbey 10-0 to jump in front
29-27. With the score tied at 33 at the 5:54 mark the Crusaders
went on a 7-1 spurt to take a 40-34 advantage. King followed with a
7-1 run of their own to tie the game at 41 with 1:35 to play.
Melisa Foures made one of two free throws to take a 42-41 edge with
1:16 remaining. A Brooke Johnson layup with ten seconds left gave
King 43-42 lead. The Crusaders tied the game at 43 as Ranson missed
a jumper and grabbed her own rebound and was fouled with one second
remaining. She converted the second of two free throws to send the
game to overtime.
In the overtime period The Abbey outscored King 10-5 and
converted on six of six free throws to take the 53-48 victory.
Ranson had a team high 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to
record a double double for the Crusaders. Foures pulled down a team
high 12 rebounds to go with seven points. Kelsey Long contributed
10 points and four rebounds.
