The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team lost to Mount Olive
73-68 on Saturday night despite a furious comeback to force
overtime. Melisa Foures's three pointer with one second left tied
the game at 63 and forced overtime. However, Mount Olive outscored
the Crusaders 10-5 in the overtime period to take the victory. The
loss drops the Abbey to 10-11 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
Mount Olive improves to 15-5 overall and 9-2 in conference.
The Crusaders jumped out quickly to a 4-0 lead, but were
outscored 22-4 by Mount Olive over the next nine minutes to fall
behind 22-10 with 7:34 left in the first half. Mount Olive
continued to pour it on as they outscored the Abbey 14-10 to take a
36-20 advantage into the half.
A 7-3 Mount Olive spurt to start the second half made the score
43-23 with 15:13 left in the game. After falling behind by 20 the
Crusaders proceeded to go on a 23-7 run to cut the deficit to only
four at 50-45 with 8:07 left in the game. A Joneiqua Gary three
pushed the Mount Olive lead up to 53-46, but Kelsey Long answered
with a three of her own to cut the deficit back to four at 53-49
with 7:27 to play. After trading baskets for several minutes a
layup by Paula Regalado with 2:35 left cut the Abbey deficit to
59-56. Caitlyn Ranson followed with a three pointer to tie the game
at 59 with 1:58 remaining. Jasmine McDonald hit a layup with 1:35
to play to regain the lead for Mount Olive at 61-59. Regalado made
one of two free throws to make it a one point game with 1:16
remaining. Tamara Nesmith made a layup with 15 seconds left to make
the Mount Olive advantage 63-60. Foures answered with a three
pointer with one-second left to tie the game at 63 and send it to
overtime.
In the overtime period the Crusaders briefly took a one point
lead at 65-64-their first lead since the 15:34 mark of the first
half-with 3:32 to play, but the Trojans finished on a 7-2 run to
take the 73-68 victory.
Long led the Crusaders with 23 points. Ranson scored 19 to go
with five assists and three steals. Foures chipped in 12 points
along with eight rebounds. Regalado had a double double with 10
points and 11 rebounds.
