Men's Basketball Ends Season With 94-74 Loss To Barton In Conference Carolinas Tournament Quarterfinal

The Belmont Abbey men's basketball team suffered a 94-74 loss at the hand of the Barton Bulldogs on Tuesday evening in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Tournament. Barton outshot the Crusaders from the field 58.1 percent (36-62) to 41 percent (25-61). The loss ends the Abbey's season at 15-12, while Barton advances to the semifinal round at Queens Friday night with a record of 18-9.

The Crusaders took a 2-0 advantage on Kyle Phillips jumper 11 seconds into the game, but Barton responded with an 11-2 run to take an 11-4 lead at the 15:04 mark. The Abbey rallied with a 16-7 surge to regain a 20-18 advantage with 10:13 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs answered by outscoring the Crusaders 34-19 to finish the half ahead by a score of 52-37.

Barton wasted no time gaining its largest advantage of the game as a 14-5 run to start the second half made the score 66-42 with 14:57 to play. The Abbey would get no closer than 18 points the remainder of the contest as Barton shot 58.1 percent (36-62) from the field in route to a 94-74 victory.

Tyshawn Good tied for the game high with 23 points for the Crusaders. Jay Council contributed 15 points and eight rebounds. Council enters his final year next year needing to score just 216 points to reach 1,000 for his career. Phillips chipped in 13 points to the Abbey cause. Phillips ends his career with 1,410 points, 16th on the school's all-time list.

Seniors Phillips, Graves, Matthew Beerse and Jakub Exner all played the final games of their careers tonight. Graves totaled three points and nine rebounds, while Exner drained a three-pointer late in the second half. Beerse dished out one assist, coming on Exner's jumper.

Gerald Boston led Barton with 23 points and dished out seven assists. Jaren Haley scored 16 points while Aaron Suggs and Aaron Brown each scored 11 for the Bulldogs.
