The Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team fell 10-7 at the hands of Wingate University this afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium. The Bulldogs scored the final three goals of the game to break a 7-7 deadlock to move to 1-1 on the year. The Abbey also is now 1-1.

Belmont Abbey trailed 4-1 early in the second quarter but outscored the Bulldogs 3-2 in the period to close to 5-4 at the half. Dan Morrissey's second goal of the game, a man-up goal, with 1:29 left cut the deficit to just one at halftime.

The third quarter was all Crusaders, scoring two goals on six shots, as Scotty Steele and Joey McGinley found the back of the cage to knot the game at six. McGinley's tally came at the 4:18 mark that pulled the Crusaders even.

With the game tied at six going to the fourth quarter, Wingate's Taylor Womble put the Bulldogs ahead at the 10:12 mark, but Steele struck again just under three minutes later to tie the game at seven.

Just over three minutes later, the Bulldogs took advantage of an Abbey penalty as Derek Watts scored a man-up goal to put Wingate ahead to stay. 56 seconds after Watts's tally, Troy Press gave Wingate some breathing room with his second goal of the afternoon, and David Lee capped the scoring at the 2:17 mark to seal the win.

The Crusaders outshot Wingate 33-32 as Steele and Morrissey both led the Abbey with two goals apiece. McGinley, Tanner Scharr and Josiah Nash all had one each. Walker Kirkikis recorded two assists and Steele was credited with one.

Nash led the Abbey with four caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Merrick Reiland made 12 saves and scooped up four ground balls.
