The Belmont Abbey women's tennis team won all but one match as
the Crusaders claimed an 8-1 win over the visiting Converse College
Valkyries this afternoon to earn their first win over a Conference
Carolinas opponent since the 2004 season, the year before the
program was suspended until the fall of 2009. The Crusaders are now
2-4 overall and 1-2 in Conference Carolinas.
The only match the Abbey lost was number one doubles, falling
8-6. Converse, which only has four players, defaulted at number
three doubles as well as five and six singles. Kirstie Jenkins won
convincingly at number one singles, dropping Olivia Self by
matching scores of 6-1. Katharine Miller earned a 6-3-6-4 win over
Raissa Morandi at number two singles, and Brooke Ingram and Shannon
Ramsey earned hard-fought wins at number three and four,
respectively. Ingram won the first set 7-6, winning the tiebreaker
7-5, and won the match with a 6-2 second set victory. Ramsey won
the first set 6-1, but fell 6-2 in the second and claimed a 6-4 win
in the third. Paige French and Bridget Franer won by default at
number five and six singles, respectively.
At doubles, Self and Taylor Bland earned the only win for
Converse with an 8-6 win over Jenkins and Miller, but the Crusaders
claimed a 9-7 win at number two doubles as Ingram and Ramsey
defeated Morandi and Marisa Esformes.
