Belmont Abbey seniors Tyshawn Good and Jay Council both scored
26 points and Chris Davis added career-high 21, but the Johnson C.
Smith Golden Bulls mantained a double digit lead in the last 12
minutes to secure a 103-90 win this afternoon at Brayboy Gymnasium.
The Abbey is now 8-3, while Johnson C. Smith, which shot 72 percent
(21-29) from the floor in the second half, improves to 7-3.
Davis posted a double double with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Good and Council both led the Crusaders with 26 as ten of Good's
points came at the charity stripe. He was seven of 20 from the
floor but just two of nine from three-point range. Council
converted 10 of 21 shots, including six of 11 from beyond the arc
to go along with seven rebounds. Belmont Abbey shot 43 percent
(31-71) from the floor as no player after Good, Council and Davis
scored more than six points.
The Golden Bulls shot 60 percent from the field as Trevin Parks,
ranked third nationally, just behind Good, in scoring average, led
all players with 29 points and five assists. He was one of five
Golden Bulls to reach double figures.
JCSU seized control quickly, bolting out to a 13-3 lead with
just under four minutes gone before a 12-3 Abbey run, capped off by
a Nigel Jackson free throw, spiraled the lead down to just one at
16-15 with an even ten to play in the half.
The Crusaders would get no closer as the Golden Bulls quickly
absorbed the Crusader run and moved their lead back into double
digits. Belmont Abbey closed the lead to as few as seven on a Good
three-pointer with 2:53 left, but Johnson C. Smith scored eight of
the final 12 points to carry a 48-37 lead into intermission.
The second half was a flurry of points as the two teams combined
to score 108 points. Johnson C. Smith missed just eight field
goals, shooting 72 percent, while the Abbey shot 51 percent from
the floor in the final stanza.
Belmont Abbey only cut the Golden Bulls lead into single
digits twice, the first coming on a Council layup with 10:22 to
play that closed the lead to nine, and the other with three minutes
left on a Davis layup.
