Box Score Belmont Abbey junior midfielder Silvia
Vazquez scored the only goal of the match with one second left
in the first half, and the Crusader defense kept a surging Pfeiffer
attack scoreless as the women's soccer team earned its seventh
Conference Carolinas title in school history with a 1-0 win over
the Falcons at Alumni Field in the Conference Carolinas Tournament
Final. The Abbey earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament,
the sixth appearance in school history, as it moves to 11-9-1,
while Pfeiffer ends its season with a mark of 10-7-3.
The title is the Abbey's seventh in school history, joining the
1998, 1999, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2009 teams. The NCAA Tournament
appearance will be the sixth, joining the 1998, 1999, 2001, 2009
and 2010 units.
Pfeiffer outshot the Abbey 6-4 in the first half as it had the
better chances, but the difference in the game was Vazquez's buzzer
beater. After a Pfeiffer foul with 15 seconds left, an Abbey free
kick from the left flank sailed to the right sideline where Vazquez
was stationed. After dribbling a yard or two, Vazquez, with three
seconds left and from about 20 yards out, sailed a shot over the
head of Britt Polly and into the left corner of the net just as
time expired on the first half.
The second half was a defensive battle, as neither team got off
a solid scoring chance, save for Pfeiffer's Alliyah Jackson's shot
that sailed high with about two minutes left. Jackson, who scored
four times against the Abbey just one week ago, was held to just
that one shot for the game.
For the contest, Pfeiffer outshot the Abbey 9-6 but the
Crusaders held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Hannah
Kohls stopped five shots while Polly did not record a save.
Vazquez was named the Tournament MVP.
