Box Score After a scoreless first half, the Wingate women's soccer team
struck for a pair of goals in the final 45 minutes to earn a 2-0
win over Belmont Abbey this afternoon at Alumni Field. Wingate
extends its winning streak to seven as it improves to 10-1-1, while
the Crusaders, which had its four-match winning streak snapped,
falls to 7-7-0 on the year.
Neither team scored in the first half as Wingate held a 6-4
advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks, but the Bulldogs
struck first early in the second half to take a lead it would never
lose. In the 58th minute, Jade Montgomery fed Shelby Forza, who had
hit the post with a shot just three minutes earlier, to the left of
the box, where Forza used the outside part of her right foot to
sail the ball over the defense and the head of goalkeeper Hannah
Kohls. The ball hit the inside part of the right post and bounced
over the line before Kohls could scramble back and swat the ball
away.
Belmont Abbey had its best chance to score in the 50th minute
when the match was still scoreless, as Silvia Vazquez got behind
the defense and lashed at the ball from the mouth of the goal. With
goalkeeper Ashlyn Hardee out of the net, a Wingate defender kicked
the ball away to avoid further damage.
Wingate added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute as Chandler
Murphy sent a cross from the right corner to the center of the box,
where Kalyn Meosky tapped the ball over to Montgomery, who beat
Kohls with an easy touch for the second and final goal of the
game.
Wingate outshot the Abbey 17-9, including 11-5 in the second
half, and held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Kohls made nine saves,
while Hardie stopped four balls.
