The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team fell to Lees-McRae
60-56 in the final minutes of a back and forth contest. The
Crusaders lead for most of the game before succumbing to a late run
by the Bobcats. With the loss the Crusaders fall to 4-7 overall and
0-2 in conference play. The win improves Lees-McRae to 5-2 overall
and 2-0 in conference.
The Crusaders fell behind early as Lees-McRae began the game on
an 8-0 run. The Crusaders responded with 9-0 run that gave them
their first lead of the game at 11-10 with 11:40 left in the first
half. Lees-McRae retook the lead a minute later and pushed their
advantage back up to as many as five. A 10-0 run gave the Crusaders
a five point advantage, their largest of the half. The Bobcats
rallied to cut the Abbey advantage to 29-27 at the half.
The Crusaders maintained the lead in the second half until the
5:52 mark when Lees-McRae tied the game on Chloe Parker's free
throw. A pair of free throws by Melisa Foures regained the lead for
the Abbey. A layup by McKenzie Owen with 4:01 left in the game gave
the Crusaders a 48-44 lead. A 10-0 run gave Lees-McRae a 54-48
advantage with 2:25 left in the game lead by a pair of threes from
Paige Whitaker and Kerri Belcher.
Foures' layup at 1:26 cut the Abbey deficit to four. Candace Fox
was fouled while making her layup with 59 seconds left to cut the
Abbey deficit to two, but Fox failed to convert on the and one
opportunity that would have cut the defecit to one. An Icey
Patterson three pointer with 29 seconds left pushed the Lees-McRae
advantage back to five. Jumpers by Foures and Owen sandwiched
between Patterson's free-throw cut the Abbey deficit to 58-56 with
eight seconds left. Patterson's free throws iced the 60-56 victory
for Lees-McRae.
Foures double double led the way for the Crusaders as she posted
13 points and 13 rebounds. Owen contributed 11 points and four
rebounds. Fox also chipped in with 10 points eight rebounds and a
team high six assists.
