The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team chopped a 16 point
deficit with four minutes to go down to six with just 12 seconds
left, but two Pfeiffer free throws with ten seconds left sealed an
80-74 Falcons win tonight in Misenheimer. The win evens the
Pfeiffer record to 9-9 overall and 4-5 in Conference Carolinas,
while the Abbey drops to 9-10 overall and 5-5 in Conference
Carolinas.
The Crusaders, which led briefly in the first half, were down
72-56 with 4:07 to play, but a 16-6 Abbey spurt, capped off by a
three-pointer from Noel Bullock, sliced the Pfeiffer lead down to
just six with 12 seconds left. The Crusaders were forced to foul,
and Pfeiffer's Kellie Rhoney hit both free throws with ten seconds
left to pad the lead to eight. Candace Fox hit a jumper at the
buzzer to cap the scoring.
Pfeiffer opened the game on a 7-2 run, but the Crusaders
answered with an 8-0 run to take a 10-7 advantage with 13:11 left
in the half. A 5-1 spurt returned a 14-11 lead to Pfeiffer at the
11:03 mark. Kelsey Long's layup with 9:42 gave the Crusaders their
final lead of the game at 15-14. The advantage was short lived as
Pfeiffer's next possession resulted in a three pointer by Jodie
Lemons that sparked a 21-6 surge and provided the Falcons with a
36-20 lead with 3:51 left in the period. A 9-2 Abbey run cut the
deficit to 38-29 at the half.
Pfeiffer outscored the Abbey 14-7 to start the second period to
seize a 52-36 advantage with 15:12 to play. The Crusaders answered
with 13-6 flurry to cut the deficit to 58-49 with 9:02 remaining. A
14-3 Falcon surge resulted in their largest lead of the game at
72-52 with 5:10 left in the contest before the late Abbey surge
kept the deficit in doubt until Rhoney's two free throws.
Melisa Foures, Long, and Caitlyn Ranson each had 13 points to
lead the Abbey with Ranson also grabbing eight rebounds. Bullock
contributed 11 points and three steals. McKenzie Owen scored 10
points to go with six rebounds.
Brittany Cox led all scorers with 22 points and nine rebounds.
Jodie Lemons pitched in 15 points for the Falcons.
