Belmont Abbey senior forward Paula Regalado sank all nine of her
field goal attempts and both of her free throw attempts to score a
game-high 20 points, and sophomore guard Kelsey Long hit three free
throws in the final 26 seconds to hand North Greenville just its
second conference loss with a 66-61 win this evening. The win evens
the Abbey's record to 9-9 overall and 5-4 in Conference Carolinas,
while North Greenville drops to 13-5 overall and 8-2 in Conference
Carolinas.
The Abbey trailed 34-30 at the half but outscored North
Greenville 35-27 in the final two minutes, seizing control of the
game on a short jumper by Regalado with 3:24 left to put the
Crusaders ahead to stay. After North Greenville had five-straight
misses from the field and the free throw line, three free throws
and two shots from the field, Noel Bullock drained a pair of free
throws with 1:43 left to push the lead to four.
18 seconds later, Christina Carlis cut the Abbey's lead to
63-61, but North Greenville did not score again. On the Abbey's
next trip down the floor, Caitlyn Ranson missed a three-pointer,
but Regalado grabbed her seventh rebound of the game and
called timeout. Coming out of the stoppage, the Abbey turned the
ball over with 57 seconds left to give North Greenville another
chance to tie or take the lead, but a missed shot was grabbed by
Regalado. Long was eventually fouled with 26 seconds left, and her
two free throws found the back of the net to widen the cushion to
four.
North Greenville called timeout, and Karly Stache's
three-pointer was off target, but grabbed by North Greenville's
Aliyah Stokes, who promptly turned the ball over with five seconds
left.
With three seconds left, Long was fouled, and she missed the
first but made the second to seal the 66-61 win.
In the first half the Abbey led 20-19 with 7:51 to go, but North
Greenville responded with a 16-10 run to close the half to enjoy a
34-30 halftime edge.
North Greenville opened the final stanza on a 10-5 jaunt to
claim its largest lead of the contest, nine points, at 44-35 with
just under five minutes gone by. The Crusaders answered by scoring
the next 13 points to reclaim a three-point lead at 47-44 with
12:02 to go.
The advantage grew to as high as six at 52-46 on another jumper
by Regalado with 9:36 to play, but North Greenville embarked on a
10-2 run to move back in front 56-54 with 6:12 to go. The two teams
traded baskets to tie the game at 59, but a jumper by Regalado a
minute-and-a-half later put the Crusaders ahead for good.
Regalado fashioned the first perfect shooting night of her
career as her 20 points led all scorers. She added eight rebounds
and two assists in 36 minutes. Bullock and Long both added 10
points apiece. Belmont Abbey shot 48.9 percent (23-47) from the
floor and were successful on six of 17 attempts from beyond the arc
(35.3 percent). North Greenville was led by Carlis's 14 points on
six of 11 shooting from the field. She was the only North
Greenville player to reach double figures.
