The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team never trailed as they
sprinted out to a 19-0 advantage en route to a 72-37 victory at St.
Andrews. With the win the Crusaders improve to 6-7 overall and even
its Conference Carolinas mark at 2-2 while St. Andrews falls to
0-12 overall and 0-5 in Conference Carolinas.
The Abbey jumped out quickly with a 19-0 run, to give it the
largest lead of the first half. St. Andrews was able to rally late
in the half to cut the Abbey lead to 28-16 at the end of the first
period.
A quick jumper by St. Andrews to start the second half cut the
Abbey advantage to 10, the smallest lead of the second half. A
33-11 run starting at the 13:22 mark and ending with 28 seconds
left gave the Abbey 37-point lead, the largest of the contest. A
St. Andrews jumper with 12 seconds remaining brought the final
tally to 72-37.
McKenzie Owen lead the way for the Crusaders with a double
double and team highs with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Caitlyn
Ranson added 11 points along with six rebounds. Alyx Ingram
contributed 10 points and seven rebounds while dishing out three
assists. Melisa Foures finished with seven points, three assists,
a steal and a blocked shot in just 19 minutes. Paula Regalado
totaled five points to bring her career total to an even 700
points.
The Abbey shot 38.6 percent (28-70) and held St. Andrews to a
23.5 percent (12-51) output. Both teams had 18 turnovers, but the
Crusaders dominated the boards by a 58-32 count.
