DAHLONEGA, Ga. -- Peyton Nation scored a team-high 15 points to go over 1,000 for her career, but a valiant effort fell just short as No. 2 seed Coker escaped with a 58-50 victory over the seventh-seeded Crusaders in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. The game was played at the Convocation Center on the campus of North Georgia.
With the results, The Abbey ends its season at 25-6, while the South Atlantic Conference regular-season champion Cobras improve to 27-6 and advance to the semifinal against No. 6 Carson-Newman.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nation hit six of 16 from the field and made three-of-six free throws to cap her career at 1,005 points. She is the 28th player in program history to reach the mark.
- Nation led the team in assists with three and shared team rebounding honors with six.
- Riley James was the only other player to top double figures in scoring with 11 points. She joined Nation atop the team rebounding lead.
- Ivana Bijic tied her career high with nine points, hitting three clutch three-pointers.
- Belmont Abbey forced the Cobras into 26 turnovers, the second-highest total of the season, and 18th time in 31 games that an opponent had 20 or more miscues.
- The Crusaders shot just 28.1 percent (18 of 64) overall from the field, while Coker connected for 47.4 percent (18 of 38). The Cobras pulled away in the fourth quarter by hitting five of nine field goals.
- The higher-seeded team also held a 39-28 advantage on the boards.
- Belmont Abbey held a 13-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter, but Coker flipped the second 12-10 for a one-point lead, 24-23, at intermission.
- The game featured seven ties and 11 lead changes with the scoring margin never reach double figures until a 12-0 Coker run spanning the third and fourth quarters.
- Still, the Cobras had to hit seven of 10 free throws in the final 1:19 to preserve the victory.
