Women's Basketball Season Ends With 66-44 Loss At Mount Olive In Conference Carolinas Tournament

The seventh-seeded Belmont Abbey women's basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 66-44 loss at second-seed Mount Olive this evening in the quarterfinal round of the 2011 Conference Carolinas Tournament. The Crusaders end their season with a record of 12-15, while Mount Olive improves to 20-7. It will host Limestone Friday evening in the semifinal round.

Belmont Abbey shot 32.7 percent (16-49) as Paula Regalado led the Crusaders with 12 points. Amanda McDonald came off the bench to score nine, and Kelsey Long added seven.

Mount Olive shot 39.7 percent (25-63) as Andrea Jones led two Trojans in double figures with 15 points. Shequanta McGee chipped in with ten points.

The Trojans built a 34-17 halftime lead as they converted 13 of their 32 field goal attempts, while the Abbey made just five of 24. The Trojans never trailed as they scored the first five points of the game as their advantage grew to as high as 19 points at 34-15 with 38 seconds left. Regalado scored the final two points of the half. Earlier, the Mount Olive lead was 11 points at 17-6, but a 5-0 mini-flurry by the Crusaders, on two free throws from Regalado and a Long three pointer, closed the lead to six, but Mount Olive scored the next eight points to return its lead to double figures.

Mount Olive opened the second half by scoring six of the first eight points to move its lead to 20 points. The Crusaders could not cut the margin to any fewer than 20 points again as the Trojans advanced.

In her final game, senior Shayla Jackson scored four points as she ended her career with 1,419 career points, the fifth most in school history.
