The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team had its six game
winning streak snapped with a 63-50 loss at Erskine this evening.
The Abbey drops to 11-9 overall and 10-4 in Conference Carolinas,
while Erskine moves to 8-10 overall and 6-6 in Conference
Carolinas.
Belmont Abbey recorded a higher field goal percentage, shooting
40 percent (20-50) from the field to just 36.4 percent (20-55) for
the Flying Fleet, but the Abbey took 16 fewer free throws, hitting
all six of its tries to a 16-22 effort for Erskine.
Shayla Jackson led the Abbey with 20 points on nine of 13
shooting from the floor with six rebounds and three assists. She
was the only Crusader to reach double figures. Amanda McDonald and
Paula Regalado both added seven points. Jackson and Kelsey Long
both led the way with six rebounds apiece. Erskine won the
rebounding battle 39-28.
Porsha Morgan all scorers and four Erskine players in double
figures with 21 points on seven of 12 shooting, while Jean Marie
Harris and Elizabeth Tatum both added 12 points. Jana Dixon chipped
in with ten. Lauren Stewart led all players with ten rebounds, five
each on the offensive and defensive glass.
Jackson put the Abbey ahead 2-0 just 36 seconds into the
contest, but that would be the only lead the Crusaders held for the
game. Erskine scored ten of the next 12 points to go ahead 10-4,
and its lead would grow to as high as seven at 14-7 with 12:37
left. An 8-4 Abbey run, capped off by a jumper from Jackson, would
pull the Crusaders to within three at 18-15 with 7:52 left in the
half. Erskine outscored the Abbey 12-7 the rest of the way to carry
a 30-23 lead into the break.
The Abbey opened the second half on a 7-2 run over the first
3:05 to slice the Fleet lead down to a pair, but Erskine responded
with a 13-5 run over the next six minutes to build its lead to 15
at 48-33 with 10:20 left.
From there, Erskine maintained its double digit lead for the
rest of the game, as the Abbey could only get to within 12 points
on a jumper from Jackson at the 6:19 mark.
