Belmont Abbey senior forward Shayla Jackson posted her fifth
double double of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds but the
Crusaders women's basketball team fell at Queens 62-52 this evening
in the regular season finale. The Abbey is now 12-14 overall and
11-9 in Conference Carolinas, while Queens is 13-13 overall and
12-8 in Conference Carolinas.
The Crusaders are the seventh seed in next week's Conference
Carolinas tournament and will go on the road to face the
second-seeded Mount Olive Trojans Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
Jackson's 12 points moves her into fifth place on the school's
all-time scoring list with 1,415 career points. All of Jackson's 11
rebounds came on the defensive glass. She sank six of her ten field
goal attempts. She also had two assists, two steals and a blocked
shot in 40 minutes. Candace Fox added a team-high 13 points on six
of ten shooting. The Crusaders shot 45.8 percent (22-48) from the
field.
Marissa Hudley led all scorers with 21 points and grabbed 12
rebounds as the Royals shot 38.5 percent (25-65) from the
field.
The Crusaders led for most of the first half, building their
lead to as high as eight points at 23-15 with 6:36 to go, but
Queens closed the half on a 13-3 run to carry a 29-26 lead into the
break.
The Royals never surrendered their lead for the duration of the
game and raised it to as high as 13 points at 59-46 with 2:47 to
go. Back-to-back three pointers from Melisa Foures and Kelsey Long
sliced the lead to seven, but Queens scored the final three points
of the game to seal the win.
