Belmont Abbey Tyshawn Good led five Crusaders in double figures
with a career-high 30 points as the Abbey scored its most points
since January 27, 2007 with a dominating 118-72 win over the
visiting Lees-McRae Bobcats this evening at the Wheeler Center.
Belmont Abbey improves to 13-12 overall and 8-9 in Conference
Carolinas, while the Bobcats drop to 6-18 overall and 2-14 in
Conference Carolinas.
The 118 points are the most since the Abbey defeated Pfeiffer
110-107 in regulation at the Wheeler Center on January 27, 2007. It
also is the most points scored against Lees-McRae, besting a 116-73
victory in 2002, and is one shy of the Wheeler Center record, which
was set during a 119-55 win over Johnson & Wales in the 1995-96
season.
Good, who scored 19 points in the first half on five of seven
shooting, did not miss in the second half, sinking all three of his
field goals, as he set his career-high with 30 points on eight of
ten shooting from the floor, including four for four from
three-point range. and ten for ten from the free throw line, all in
just 24 minutes. Richard Barbee and Jay Council both added 19
points, while Kyle Phillips contributed 17 on eight of 12 shooting
and Darryl Durham added 11. Every available player saw action and
all but one scored. The Abbey shot 58.7 percent (44-75) from the
field, including a 63.9 percent clip in the second half, and
converted eight of 16 from beyond the arc.
Adam McFerran led the Bobcats with 14 points on 7-of-13
shooting, as Daniel Sepokas chipped in 11 markers and a team-high
three assists. Reshon Benjamin, Tevin Friday and DeAndre Tillman
each tallied eight points, as Sepokas chipped in three steals.
Both teams got off to a strong start in the first half, with
Lees-McRae opening a narrow 12-9 lead on a Sepokas jumper at the
14:26 mark before Belmont Abbey responded. After the Abbey knocked
down a pair of buckets and Tillman answered for Lees-McRae with a
jumper, the Crusaders launched a 20-5 run to open a 33-19 lead on a
Good triple with 8:28 to go in the half. Belmont Abbey continued to
dictate play for the remainder of the half, pushing the margin to
57-37 at the break on a three-pointer by Council with 1:03 left on
the clock.
The Abbey carried the momentum into the second half, opening the
period with a 21-11 run to widen the margin to 78-48 with 14:08 to
play. From there, the Abbey went on a 25-12 run over the next 11
minutes to expand its lead to 45 points, 105-60, with 5:38 to
play.
The cushion never dipped below 40 after that, and it rose to its
highest of the game, 47 points, on the second of two three-pointers
by Kevin Orford, to make the score 116-69 with 1:59 to go. Zach
Sowell closed the scoring with a layup at the 1:03 mark.
Barbee's 19 points moves his career total to 1,971, just 29 away
from becoming the fourth player in school history to reach the 2000
point plateau.
