Belmont Abbey senior guard Richard Barbee sank the winning
jumper with two seconds left to cap a 16-4 Abbey run in the final
4:43 as the Crusaders erased an 11 point deficit to earn an 90-89
win at Pfeiffer this evening. The Abbey, winners of three-straight,
move to 12-10 overall and 7-7 in Conference Carolinas, while the
Falcons drop to 9-12 overall and 7-6 in Conference Carolinas.
Barbee, who tied for the game-high with 24 points, scored 16 of
his points in the final 8:06, including five in the last
26 seconds, as he sank the winning jumper with two seconds left.
The Abbey trailed by 11, 85-74 with 4:50 left on a three-pointer by
Pfeiffer's Josh Humphrey, but that would be the last Falcons field
goal of the contest as they missed their last eight shots of the
game. Their final four points came from the free throw line.
Matthew Beerse hit the second of two free throws to cut the lead
to ten, and after both teams combined to miss the next six shots,
Barbee cut the deficit to eight with a jumper and foul at the 2:59
mark. He missed the free throw, but Kyle Phillips beat his man,
grabbed the rebound and sank the conversion to slice the lead to
six.
A turnover by Humphrey on Pfeiffer's next trip down the floor
turned into another basket from Barbee, a short jumper to cut the
lead to four. An Abbey fould put Pfeiffer's Chris Woods on the
line, and his two successful free throws pushed the Falcons lead
back to six.
16 seconds later, it went back down to four as Barbee sank a
running layup. A Pfeiffer timeout, followed by a missed Falcons
three-pointer, turned into a two-point Abbey deficit as Barbee fed
Phillips for a layup at the 1:10 mark.
After an Abbey timeout, Humphrey missed a jumper that was
corralled by Ian Parry. The Crusaders set up the offense, and
Barbee bombed a three-pointer with 26 seconds left to put the
Crusaders ahead for the first time since the 18:11 mark. Barbee's
three gave the Abbey a razor-thin 88-87 advantage.
With 17 seconds left, Pfeiffer's Davon Gilliard was fouled, and
his two free throws pushed the Falcons ahead by one, 89-88, but
they would not score again. 15 seconds later, Barbee sank a jumper
for his 24th and final points, his 16th in the last eight minutes,
to put the Abbey ahead for good.
Pfeiffer immediately called timeout, and Woods nearly pulled off
a buzzer beater as his 30-footer caromed off the backboard and
front rim.
Barbee, who only had four points at the half, converted six of
his last eight shots as his 24 points gives him exactly 1,900 for
his career. He finished with 24 points on nine of 18 shooting with
five rebounds, four assists and two steals in 36 minutes. Phillips
added 21 points on nine of 15 shooting with two rebounds and two
blocked shots. Tyshawn Good chipped in with 15 points on five of
seven shooting with three assists. The Abbey shot 55.7 percent
(34-61) in the contest, including 58.6 percent in the second half,
and won the rebouding edge 39-29.
Pfeiffer shot 47.8 percent (32-67) as Woods led the Falcons with
24 points on nine of 13 shooting. Humphrey added 18, while Kyler
Gregory added 12 and Jeff Pettiway contributed ten.
