Belmont Abbey freshman forward McKenzie Owen set a career-high
and led all scorers with 18 points as the Crusaders women's
basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 76-63 win
over the visiting Livingstone Lady Bears this afternoon at the
Wheeler Center. The Abbey moves to 4-6 on the year, while
Livingstone drops to 4-7. The victory gives the Abbey a season
sweep of the Lady Bears in the season series.
Owen, whose previous best was 12 points, made eight of 11 shots
in 20 minutes, adding four rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot.
Kelsey Long added 17 on five of eight shooting, including two of
four from three-point range, with six rebounds, two assists and a
steal. Candace Fox posted 11 points on five of seven shooting with
six assists. Brittaney Rice also had six assists as 22 of the
Abbey's 29 field goals were assisted. Belmont Abbey shot a
season-best 55.8 percent (29-52) from the floor.
Livingstone shot 30 percent (18-60) as Kelcyn Manurs led the
Lady Bears with 17 points. Tiffany Evans added 15.
Belmont Abbey, which never trailed, led by as many as 32 points
before the Lady Bears chopped it down to ten at 66-56 with 1:20 to
play, but the Crusaders converted eight of 11 free throws, and used
layups from Owen and Rice to thwart any more damage.
