The Belmont Abbey men's basketball suffered their second loss of
the season, falling to Georgia College in a 98-91 nailbiter despite
Tyshawn Good's career high 33 point performance. It was the Abbey's
second defeat in as many days at the Queens Final Fire Classic.
With the loss the Crusaders fall to 2-2 on the season while Georgia
College improves to 3-1.
The Crusaders led by as many as 14 in the first half after
starting the game on an 18-4 run. With the Abbey leading 18-4 at
the 15:22 mark in the first half, Georgia College went on a 13-2
run to cut the advantage 20-17 with 12:49 to play. Georgia College
was able to tie the game at 36 with 2:39 left in the half before
the Crusaders went on a 12-5 run to give them a 48-41 advantage at
the half.
An 18-8 run to start the second half gave the Crusaders their
largest lead of the contest at 66-49. Starting with 15:18 left in
the game Georgia College went on a 15-2 run to cut the lead to
68-64. Georgia College took their first lead of the contest at the
7:38 mark on a Ryan Aquino jumper. The lead would change hands ten
more times in the last 7:19 with the Crusaders last lead coming on
Terrone Sheffey's three with 2:38 left in the game. A steal by
Aquino that lead to a three pointer by Quin Bivins gave Georgia
College a 91-89 lead and started a 9-2 run that saddled the
Crusaders with the 98-91 loss.
Good led the Crusaders with 33 points, making 11 of 17 shots and
6 of 9 three pointers, and adding a team high three steals. He
surpassed his previous career scoring mark of 30 set last February
in a win over Lees-McRae. Kyle Phillips added 19 points and a team
high eight rebounds for the Abbey. Jay Council contributed 11
points and two steals. Sheffey pitched in nine points and dished
out a team high five assists.
