Belmont Abbey senior forward Shayla Jackson and freshman guard
Candace Fox led four Crusaders in double figures with 16 points
apiece as the Crusaders women's basketball team ended a two-game
losing streak with a 76-61 win over the visiting Erskine Flying
Fleet this evening at the Wheeler Center. The Abbey moves to 3-7
overall and evens its Conference Carolinas mark at 2-2, while
Erskine drops to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in Conference Carolinas.
Jackson posted her second double double of the year as she
scored 16 points on 7-13 shooting from the field, with 11 rebounds,
four assists and four steals in 32 minutes. Fox added a career-high
16 points on six of 11 shooting with five rebounds, four assists
and four steals in 38 minutes. Autumn Smith-Faulkner added a
career-best 15 points as she fashioned a near-perfect shooting
night, attempting seven shots with six conversions, including a
pair of three-pointers in just 19 minutes. Paula Regalado added 14
points, four rebounds and three assists in 23 minutes.
Belmont Abbey shot 49.2 percent (29-59), its second-highest
output of the season, and sank 13 of its 18 free throw attempts
(72.2 percent).
Erskine was led by Elizabeth Tatum, who posted game-highs with
18 points and 14 rebounds. She also had two assists, two blocked
shots and two steals in 38 minutes. Jean Marie Harris added 13
points as the Fleet shot 36.2 (25-69) from the field.
The Abbey led for most of the first half until an Erskine run
gave it its first lead at 15-14 with 8:04 left, but the Crusaders
outscored the Fleet 15-14 the rest of the way to take a 31-29 lead
into the break.
In the second half the Crusaders never trailed as their lead
grew to as high as 12 points at 53-41 with 10:46 to go. Erskine
chopped the lead down to as few as seven points on five separate
occasions, but the Abbey closed the game on a 12-4 run over the
final 4:17 to seal the win.
