The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team had its three game
winning streak snapped as it fell to 59-43 this afternoon at
Kornegay Arena.
Mount Olive (9-4 overall, 6-1 Conference Carolinas) led by as
many as 20 points in the second half, then withstood a late Belmont
Abbey rally. Melisa Foures hit a three-pointer with 4:43 left to
play to pull the Crusaders within 49-38. Alyssa Luebs answered with
a three-point play for Mount Olive and the Trojans held Belmont
Abbey (5-8, 4-3) to a pair of free throws and a three-pointer the
rest of the way.
Mount Olive forced turnovers on Belmont Abbey's first two
possessions and connected on each of its first four shot attempts,
capped by Whitby's three-pointer to give the Trojans a 9-0 lead a
little over two minutes into the game. Mount Olive built the lead
to as many as 11 points before Candace Fox's three-pointer
highlighted a 9-0 Belmont Abbey run to pull the Crusaders within
13-11 with 12:54 left in the first half.
After Jasmine Whitby's three-pointer with 11:31 left ended a
four-minute Trojan drought, Mount Olive answered a Belmont Abbey
basket with 13 unanswered points as Laporsha Davis' three-point
play gave the Trojans a 29-13 lead with 3:30 left before halftime.
The margin grew to as many as 18 points after back-to-back
three-pointers by Andrea Jones in the final 90 seconds. Foures hit
a three-pointer for Belmont Abbey with 20 seconds left and Mount
Olive settled for a 35-20 lead at the break.
Davis opened the second half with a three-pointer, but Shayla
Jackson answered with a short jumper for Belmont Abbey and Fox
added another three to pull the Crusaders within 13. A
three-pointer and a layup by Davis capped a 7-0 Trojan run and
Mount Olive took its biggest lead at 45-25 with 12:09 left to play.
The Trojans were held to only four points over the next eight
minutes until Luebs' three-point play helped Mount Olive pull
away.
Davis, who registered a double double with 15 points and 12
rebounds, shared game-high honors with six assists and also
recorded three steals. Brittany Miller dished out a career-high six
assists and led all players with four steals. Whitby registered 19
points and 14 rebounds.
Foures and Jackson led Belmont Abbey with 12 points apiece.
Jackson pulled down eight rebounds, while Fox had six assists.
