The 18th-ranked Belmont Abbey women's soccer team scored three
goals on its first four shots and never looked back en route to a
7-0 Conference Carolinas victory over host St. Andrews Presbyterian
College Saturday afternoon. The undefeated Crusaders (8-0-0
Overall, 3-0-0 Conf.) took advantage of the downward wind in the
first half with five opening period goals. The Lady Knights (1-4-0,
1-2-0) managed just four shots against an Abbey defense that has
only allowed one goal in eight games.
Six different Crusaders scored with junior Rebecca Mateo pacing
the bunch with two goals.
Senior Anna Donaldson and sophomore Deborah Noga combined for
the seventh clean sheet by Abbey goalkeepers this season. Donaldson
(8-0) had two stops minding the Abbey net for the first 85 minutes.
Senior Becca Knott had a busy day between the pipes for SAPC.
Knott faced 26 shots, making a game-high eight saves on 15 attempts
on frame.
The Abbey outshot St. Andrews 26-4, and took all nine corner
kicks.
After eight-plus minutes of scoreless action, Belmont Abbey
struck for two unassisted goals in a 39 second span. Junior Kiera
Woerner started the scoring barrage at the 8:41 mark and Mateo
followed with a tough angle goal at 9:20. Freshman Emily Archer
beat a defender and scored from the top of box less than three
minutes later in the 13th minute.
Freshman Ananda Gebreyesus netted the Crusaders only assisted
goal in the 32nd minute before a sophomore Alana Ryczek tally in
the 39th minute increased the visitors lead to five before
halftime. Senior Lindsay Palm had Belmont Abbey's lone assist.
St. Andrews was able to keep the third ranked team in the region
scoreless for the first 35 minutes of the second half but the Abbey
struck for two late goals by Mateo and junior Connie Axiotis to
increase the final margin of victory to seven goals.
