Men's Lacrosse Fourth Quarter Surge Falls Short In 13-10 Loss To Fourth-Ranked Limestone

Trailing 11-5 going into the fourth quarter, the Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team outscored Limestone 5-2 in the final 15 minutes, but could not trim the margin any fewer than three goals as the fourth-ranked Saints moved to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in Conference Carolinas with a 13-10 win this afternoon at Alumni Field. The Abbey is now 5-5 overall and 2-2 in Conference Carolinas.

In a wild fourth quarter that featured seven goals on 12 shots and four penalties, the Crusaders scored the first three goals of the frame in the first five minutes on a goal by Dan Morrissey and two more from Brian Watson to close the Saints lead to 11-8. One minute after Watson's second goal, Riley Loewen stretched the lead back to four at 12-8 with 8:54 left. 1:34 later, Joey Peruzzi fired back to again cut the lead to three, but a Joshua Williams goal at the 3:33 mark moved the advantage to 13-9. Nick Boylan, who scored the first goal of the game, also scored the last of the game, this one with 1:03 left, to contribute the final goal of the game.

Limestone outshot the Abbey 40-28 as Morrissey led the Crusaders with three goals, while Boylan and Watson had two. Peruzzi, Dave DiLuigi and Tanner Scharr all had one each. Austin Whitesell handed out two assists, while Boylan and Morrissey had one each. DiLuigi won all four of his face off attempts, and Watson won five of 12.

Loewen led the Saints with four goals on five shots, while Jake Rogalia and Mike Poerstel had three each. Brian Patridge scored twice and Williams had one.

LaRoca and Poerstel led all players with five ground balls as the Saints controlled that category 44-23. Morrissey scooped up four ground balls for the Crusaders.

Saints goalkeeper Steve Gartelman made 13 saves, including four in the fourth quarter, while Tony Kikola made nine saves and had one ground ball.
