Belmont Abbey junior forward Shayla Jackson converted ten of 11
shots from the field for a game-high 20 points, as the Crusaders
women's basketball team shot 63 percent from the floor in a 79-64
win at Erksine this evening. The Abbey, winners of nine of its last
11, moves to 13-8 overall and 11-5 in Conference Carolinas, while
Erskine drops to 7-12 overall and 6-9 in Conference Carolinas.
Jackson, who led five Crusaders in double figures, sank ten of
11 field goal attempts to go along with four rebounds, a blocked
shot and a steal in just 23 minutes. Sophomore forward Paula
Regalado added a career-high 17 points on three of six shooting
from the floor and a 11-13 effort from the free throw line. She
added four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Courtney Naquin
and Asha Hardaway both finished with 13 points, with Naquin pulling
down six rebounds and handing out three assists. Hardaway posted
three rebounds and a steal. Kelsey Daniel chipped in with 11
points, five rebounds and four assists. Belmont Abbey sank 27 of
its 43 field goal attempts.
Erskine shot 42 percent as Porsha Morgan led three players in
double figures with 16 points, while Elizabeth Tatum and Mary Ann
Lanford added 15 and ten, respectively.
The Abbey built a 44-27 halftime lead behind a solid 67 percent
shooting effort (16-24) as it never trailed after giving up the
first basket of the game. After Erskine knotted the game at four on
a Tatum jumper, the Abbey grabbed took command of the contest with
a 29-12 run over the course of 13 minutes to claim its biggest lead
of the half at 34-16 with 5:57 left. Erskine could not close to any
fewer than 13 points, and Daniel and Hardaway scored the final four
points of the stanza to give the Abbey a 44-37 halftime lead.
In the second half the Crusaders lead never dipped below ten
points and climbed to as high as 19. The Flying Fleet trimmed its
deficit to ten points at 61-51 with 7:24 left, but the Abbey
outscored them 17-12 in the final 7:11 to earn the 15-point
win.
