Six Crusaders reached double figures as the Belmont Abbey men's
basketball team halted a five-game losing streak with a dominating
99-26 win over Johnson & Wales this afternoon at Charlotte's
Time Warner Cable Arena, home of the Charlotte Bobcats. The Abbey
improves to 12-12 and finishes its non-conference slate with a 4-2
record.
The Abbey's 73-point margin of victory was the highest lead of
the game as freshman guard Tyshawn Good led six Crusaders in double
figures with 24 points on 11-13 shooting to go along with six
steals. Jay Council and Ian Parry both added 12 points apiece,
while Richard Barbee, Terrone Sheffey and Kyle Phillips all had ten
points. Phillips narrowly missed a double double with nine rebounds
as the Crusaders dominated the boards by a 39-24 count. Sheffey and
Andre Fells tied for the game-high with four assists apiece.
Johnson & Wales shot 29 percent from the field, but sank
just one three-pointer in 13 attempts as James Atkins led the
Wildcats with seven points and five rebounds. Vincent Freeman added
five points.
Belmont Abbey never trailed and led 29-2 midway through the
first half and took its biggest lead of the stanza at 39 points,
53-14 into the break.
In the second half, the Crusaders scored 18 of the first 20
points as the lead grew to 57 points, 73-16, with 14:33 left. The
Abbey outscored the Wildcats 46-12 in the second half as it went on
to win, 99-26.
